There are four stages of the mosquito life cycle: egg, larva, pupa and adult. Eggs are laid in standing water, either individually or in “rafts”, and hatch into larvae within 48 yours.

After hatching, larvae live in the water from 4 to 14 days. They molt 4 times by shedding their skins getting larger each time. After the fourth molt the larvae transform into pupa.

During the pupal stage, the mosquito changes into an adult similar to a caterpillar developing into a butterfly while in a cocoon. The pupa stage lasts from 1 to 10 days, at the end of which the adult mosquito emerges fully developed.

The adult mosquitoes live a few weeks during which time the female mosquitoes will bite humans and animals for a blood meal. The males feed on nectar from flowers. Mating occurs near the area of emergence and the cycle begins again.
