Atlanta Pyrethrum Systems

Mosquito Free Backyards uses pyrethrum, and when used according to label instructions, it is one of the least toxic, most effective insecticides known, in all of our automatic insect control systems.. Pyrethrum is derived from chrysanthemum flowers and is one of the most effective insecticides known, yet has low toxicity for humans, pets, and other mammals when used according to label instructions.

Pyrethrins are fast acting insecticides which act on the insects central nervous systems, helping eliminate outdoor pests while being environmentally friendly. Pyrethrum is usually combined with a synergist such as vegetable oil, diatomaceous earth or piperonyl butoxide to enhance its effect and keep the insect from metabolizing the insecticide. Thus formulated, pyrethrum is one of the fastest acting, most effective insecticides available. It acts almost immediately to knock down and paralyze insects even before killing them. Insects will fly or run around erratically indicating a loss of central nervous system control. This process, called activation, flushes out hidden insects which then come in contact with the main insecticide. Pyrethrum also has a “jamming” effect which jams the insect’s food seeking mechanism and stopping it from biting even before the insecticide takes effect.

Despite its effectiveness on insects, pyrethrins are very safe for humans and other mammals because they are able to metabolize and break down pyrethrum. Pyrethrins are biodegradable and quickly break down in sunlight, moisture and oxygen. Pyrethrum is so safe that the United States government has approved it for use as a post harvest insecticide. It is approved for use on many fruits and vegetables as they are being transported to the supermarket or packaging facility.

Pyrethrins are an excellent choice for long term use. Despite decades of use, no insect population has ever developed a resistance to pyrethrum. Unlike many other insecticides, pryrethins continue to be effective even when they are used in the same area over a long period of time.
